Why should you use Omega 3 for mental health?

Hey guys. I thought I'd write an article about Omega 3 and it's important role in healthy mental function and cognitive development.

Recently, I've been battling a serious case of depression. Which is very odd considering everything in my life has been going perfect. I've also been diagnosed with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and it's been really draining and impacts my life in so many different ways.

I was researching the internet and have found that my diet was really lacking in fish (which as a direct result also effected how much Omega 3 I was consuming)

Omega 3 is classified as an Essential Fatty Acid (the good kind). Your body is unable to manufacture Omega 3 and it must be ingested in either food form (like eating Sardines, Salmon, Tuna, Walnuts etc) or via supplementation. The good Omega 3 has high levels of EPA and DHA (always read the labels and seek out the mg ratings on your supplements for these 2 important Omega 3 nutrients)

Since I'm more of a convenience guy, I like to take the odourless fish oil. When choosing an Omega 3 supplement try to find the filtered kind - the kind that has removed most of the harmful PCB, Dioxins and Mercury (all of which are toxic to the body)

Why do I use Omega 3? Well the most important benefits of Omega 3 are:

  • Improved memory and cognitive function (may also assist with dopamine and serotonin usage by the brain)
  • Better problem solving ability
  • Stabilises your mood/temperament
  • Greatly reduces my OCD habits
  • Helps treat depression
  • Maintains the cardiovascular system
  • It's good for the heart - helps maintain blood pressure
  • Maintains healthy retina function (good for your eyes)
  • Reduces swelling and joint pain associated with arthritus (can improve mobility over time)
  • Reduces LDL/plaques (bad fats) in the arteries and can help lower bad fat levels in the blood.

As with all things. There are some potentially unwanted side effects that I've noticed when upping my Omega 3 intake. The side effects I've seen as a direct result of using Omega 3 are:

  • Slight headache (this may be attributed to higher than normal toxins in the cheaper Omega 3 supplements) so always use the filtered/mercury free types!
    • Slight stomach discomfort (not painful or unbearable)
    • May increase gas (flatulence)
    • Some brands may have a fishy odour/aftertaste
    • Cost of the better Omega 3 supplements can be quite expensive
Overall the many added benefits that Omega 3 supplements have provided me with are priceless. It really seems to help me with not only my mental faculties but controls my OCD so I don't need to take my medication. It's my lifesaver and I do hope it helps my fellow readers out there!

As with all things, moderation is key. The FDA has approved Omega 3 as a recognised supplement - however I would not consume more than 3 grams a day over the long term. Also, if you are taking blood thinners or have a known history of heart problems I would consult your GP/physician before taking Omega 3 supplements as it's known to thin out the blood.

Mind Machines and what they're useful for. Our review.

Mind Machines - What are they for? Our review..

Mind machines have been popularized since early 90's (in truth, they've probably been around for much longer)

They're built upon the concept of light and sound for brainwave entrainment. Very useful for improving multiple areas of your life. It combines both sound and light to help induce relaxation and meditation. Without having the necessity of being a guru. This allows patients to heal naturally.

Using a mind machine will help to reduce symptoms of: Stress, Anxiety, Alzheimer's, PTSD, ADD, PMS, CFS, SAD, Depression, Insomnia, Autism, Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia and many other conditions.

The effective use of brainwave frequency entrainment via binaural simulation technology helps to program the mind's elasticity. Invoking deep meditation that will not take years (such as the meditation techniques utilised by monks)

These Mind Machines help to rebuild our neurochemicals and in many patients, this is a completely safe and drug-free alternative to mainstream western medicine and drugs. In fact, various homeopathic practictioners will actually recommend these machines over using drugs as a fix to many ailments and conditions.

Allowing your body to naturally heal and repair itself. On average sessions with a mind machine can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. The longer your sessions are; the better you will feel as the time spent with the machine allows your brain to produce important neurochemicals naturally. The importance of which can never be underestimated. Because when our neurochemicals are out of balance; mental diseases and conditions start to easily form.

Heal yourself with a mind machine today and take full advantage of all the health benefits that come with it.

Free Psychological Self-Help

Here's a great free online resource touching upon psychological self help and theory. It delves into behavioral analysis and why we do certain things the way we do them. Interesting online book that I thought would interest some of my readers. Enjoy.

It's important that if you have psychological issues you need help with that you seek clinical advice from a psychologist who's trained in this field.

Psychological problems may also stem from brain trauma, injury, drug usage, genetic predisposition, kundalini and neurochemical imbalances.

NLP - How To Anchor (A Useful State Of Mind)

Anchoring is the fancy name for it.

What is it you may ask?

It's a specific Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) technique that is useful for inducing a specific state of mind.

By linking an external stimuli to an internal response, we can bring about any desired useful state that we choose.

It is through conditioning (anchoring) that we can begin to create these strong associations and apply them in a useful way, into our every-day lives.

An example of an anchor may be that a certain smell or fragrance reminds you of a particular person. This is an anchor. It's a subconscious 'link' from your external experience... and internally represented by your familiar friend, to you.

Another example of an anchor in effect is when you listen to a certain song. That certain song may remind you of a certain person. This is because your unconscious mind and your conscious mind have made a 'link' between a certain stimulus (in this case a smell) and the response (your partner).

Anchors can be formed both consciously and subconsciously (through both habit and repetition).

How To Create A (Useful) Anchor

Step 1. Defining Your (Useful) State Of Mind (in this example we'll use the emotion: happy)

Step 2. Visualization. Close your eyes, visualize and remember a time when an event that made you 'happy' and really re-experience it. Vividly in your mind. Play, repeat, play, repeat it over and over in your head. The feelings will begin to come back to you as if it's happening all over again.

Step 3. As you are visualizing. You want to anchor in this useful state by performing a very specific action. This might be by 'touching your index and middle fingers together with slight pressure' or even 'clicking your fingers'.

It doesn't matter how or where you choose to anchor. As long as the action is very specific and memorable to you.

Step 4. Repeats steps 1-3. The more times you do it. The more you strengthen your anchor. You can set up multiple anchors on your body as long as the actions are uniquely different. You can also use all of your 5 senses when anchoring.. The more senses that are involved in the process, the more stronger your anchor will be.

That's the basics of a visual-kinesthetic anchoring technique. For more information on NLP techniques:

Combining The Power Of Positive Affirmations + Subliminal Messages. Re-Program Your Mind

Affirmation - Is the act of affirming or asserting or stating something.

What you consistantly think about, will eventually manifest itself into your life. If you're consistantly thinking negatively, then you will attract and manifest negative circumstances into your life. They may even manifest in ways that could make you self-sabotage your successes.

The subconscious mind is on auto-pilot. 24/7. It doesn't ever sleep, even though we do.

It will continually pick up all your thoughts and feelings and store it somewhere within your mind. There is a great deal of space there to store an almost infinite amount of information. Much more than we can consciously detect and are aware of. It is within these very confines that lay the chains that hold us back. These chains sabotage our success and increases our failures.

To re-program the mind would be to release ourselves from those very shackles that kept us bound for so long. We are able to break free from even the harshest of traumatic experiences, and the toughest of habits, with a significant deal of ease.

But don't just believe it. Try it out for yourself :)
