Symptoms Of Severe Depression - Know The Signs

Symptoms of severe depression

how to spot the signs and get help before it spirals out of control.

Life has many up and down moments. Depression is different from just having a bad day every now and then. Depression effects many of us and some people find that it's hard to ask for help when they suffer from depression too.

What is depression?

People who are depressed feel empty, unenthusiastic about life and at times can also feel apathetic. They are generally withdrawn from society and constantly are thinking about bad thoughts (which may also include self-harm thoughts) depressed people also feel like they're alone in this world (even if they have many loving family and friends) they can feel helpless and hopeless.

Signs of depression

Here are some of the classical signs of clinical depression that can help you to identify the symptoms.
  • feeling hopeless, guilty, helpless or useless most of the time.
  • consistantly worrying about events (whether real or imagined)
  • the inability to control negative thoughts and emotions
  • feeling trapped or suffocating with no logical reasons as to why
  • loss of apetite (including self-starvation)
  • loss of will to survive (can include self-harm and suicidal thoughts)
  • the inability to control your temper and have sudden outrages
  • thoughts of wanting to hurt yourself or others around you
  • major sleeping difficulties
  • lack of energy (severe lethargy)
  • difficulties in accepting positive events/changes
  • socially withdrawn
  • overeating
Some of these symptoms will manifest themselves if you're depressed. It's important to seek medical help if you feel the negative impacts that depression have on yourself is getting out of control (especially if you have thoughts about self-harm and suicide)

Here are some important points to consider when diagnosing depression states.

1) Adolescence and teenagers going through rapid hormonal changes can result in mood swings and natural chemical imbalances. This is entirely normal.
2) Depression is a constant thing (having a bad day every now and then does not mean you're depressed; it just means you where stressed on that day)
3) Depression and severe depression. Certain symptoms are indicative of having depression - severe depression is where the symptoms are consistant and the individual is actually attempting self-harm.
4) Woman also tend to suffer from depression more so then men. This is due to hormonal fluctuations such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), postpartum depression, perimenopausal depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Different types of depression

Major depression

Major depression is mainly characterized by having an inability to enjoy life and experience natural pleasure. Symptoms may be current or reoccur with regularity. There may also be a certain time frame for the amount of time you experience major depression (eg. 3-6 month periods).

Atypical Depression

Atypical depression is another subtype of major depression. Featuring temporary positive mood lifts in response to stimuli. An example of this would be after hearing something good from your friends or family. The positive feeling seldom sticks around and the individual goes back to feeling depressed after a short time.

Dysthymia (classic mild depression)

Dysthmia is a more mild form of depression. This type of depression is moderate and alternates between a mild feeling of depression and normal mood levels. Classical symptoms of dysthymia are not nearly as strong as symptoms of major depression - but tend to last longer periods (2+ years).
Dysthymia sufferes have problems 'living life to the max' and tend to forget positive events that occur in life easily. If you have dysthymia you may have always just felt depressed (and this would be 'normal' to you) it's a relatively easy form of depression to treat.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

Stormy and rainy days can cause seasonal affective disorder. This is due to people getting easily depressed in seasons like autumn and winter. Where there are many frequent overcast days and natural sun light is quite scarce. This depression is called seasonal affective disorder or otherwise known as SAD. Researchers believe that this type of depression is due to the functioning of the pineal gland. The pineal gland is photosensitive (is affected by light) and because the pineal gland helps convert melatonin to serotonin, with the use of light. SAD can effectively be treated with light therapy (using artificial lights that mimics the sun to boost your mood)

Natural Depression Treatment And Remedies

Depression is a very serious issue. It's a mental condition that effects millions of people around the world.

Depression causes us to feel extremely down and pessimistic with life's outlook. With severe cases often leading to suicidal thoughts or self-harm. Most mental health therapists would generally prescribe SSRI and anti-depressent drugs to help with the symptoms of depression. This is a practice that I would generally advise against because a lot of those medications have extremely bad side effects.

There has been quite a lot of studies and research performed on natural remedies for beating off a bout of the blues.

Today, we'll be focusing on two powerful and natural depression remedies.

First, we'll focus our attention on L-Tryptophan, this important amino acid is required in our bodies for the synthesis of Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine / 5-HT) which is the neurochemical involved in the regulation of mood, muscle contractions, appetite and sleep.
It's understood that low levels of serotonin has many debilitating effects on the body (such as mood swings, aggression, psychotic episodes, seizures, anxiety and insomnia) Tryptophan can help with these symptoms and reduce depression because it converts into serotonin in the body and has a great uptake profile. The secret is to have adequate levels of serotonin - this will allow you to feel good and help you to maintain a positive attitude in life.

By supplementing your diet with adequate levels of L-Tryptophan you can give your body a natural positive boost (provided you should also have a well balanced diet). Reason why is because your body will be able to produce adequate levels of serotonin and this in turn will brighten up your mood, naturally without the use of any drugs.

Another supplement that's good for treating depression is 5-HTP. Some people who are already taking this supplement, don't feel that it's quite as effective as L-Tryptophan. The reason why is because 5-HTP can get converted into serotonin within the liver (before it reaches the brain) if this happens then it will not effectively pass the blood-brain barrier, rendering it only semi-effective. Not only that but 5-HTP has the tendency to accumulate in areas (such as the stomach's GI tract and heart - which can lead to other serious health complications) doses should range from 50-100mg of 5-HTP per day. No more is neccessary for even the most severest cases of depression. You should also cycle the intake of 5-HTP (i.e 3 weeks daily use / 1 week off or taken for a few days and given a rest for a few days etc.)

L-Tryptophan is the usually preffered supplement because it allows serotonin synthesis to occur naturally (and all of it passes through the blood-brain barrier making it more effective than 5-HTP). If you are thinking of taking 5-HTP I would advise you try supplementing with Tryptophan first as it's much gentler and safer on the body. If you have no results with tryptophan then try using 5-HTP.

If you're on anti-depressants or MAOIs already I would consult your GP/Doctor before taking these supplements just in case they interact with your meds. It's always better to be safe, than sorry.

At night time the excess serotonin in your brain gets converted to melatonin through the pineal gland. This is what allows us to fall asleep at night (because the darkness triggers your pineal gland to secrete melatonin which then causes us to fall asleep).

It's also important to note that it is possible to overdose on too much serotonin (it's not hard to OD on serotonin when you use 5-HTP as there's no regulation to control how much 5-HTP will get converted into serotonin). Serotonin syndrome causes negative autonomic, cognitive and somatic effects. This can be the result of improper supplementation, drug abuse, natural genetics and abnormal diets can also contribute to this.

If you have depression; these 2 supplements can have you feeling much better in a short amount of time (I'd say about 1 week to feel some positive results). I would advise against taking both supplements together as this can likely cause serotonin syndrome (only take one or the other and my recommendation is to start with L-Tryptophan first)

15 steps to self improvement that you can begin to apply immediately

Here are 15 steps to self improvement that you can being to apply immediately. There's nothing overly complicated about these exercises. Some will come to you naturally, whilst others you may have to work on. Which ever is the case.. here are 15 steps to improving yourself.

Cultivate a healthy and positive state of mind - Your state of mind will dictate your actions and your actions will also dictate your state of mind. Think positive and smile in even the toughest of times. Positivity is a contagious thing.
Learn to forgive (yourself and others) - We're all human and we all make mistakes. Learn to forgive yourself as well as other people in your life. You won't need to carry any resentment or sorrow if you can do this well.
Learn to love yourself before you love others - It's easier to love other people for who they are if we can first love ourselves in the same way. You're unique and there's no one else in this world like you. Loving yourself means that you accept yourself for who you are, your weaknesses, strengths and personalitiy make you who you are.
Smile more often - I used to have a friend who never smiled. He was rather melancholic at the best of times. I would smile more often around him and gradually.. he would begin to too. Smiling releases neurochemicals that make us feel good (and it also makes others around us feel good too).

Say hi to a random stranger - It's amazing how many of us are so busy most of the times that we zoom through life not acknowledging those around us. Next time your out, smile and say hi to a random stranger. I guarantee this will boost your confidence levels and you'll probably have many fun and interesting conversations.
Be confident (and assertive) - Natural confidence comes from the belief that you'll be ok no matter what the situation is. Believing in yourself and your natural given rights will empower you. Even if you're not too confident; you can fake it till you make it (it still works)
Trust in your judgement and follow your hunches - Sometimes we'll fail to act because we're not 100% sure of the outcome. Even if we're confident there may be times when inner self-doubt kicks in. It's in these moment that I would advise to follow your hunch. Your brain may not always know the answer.. but your heart certainly does!
Develop a winning midset - This also can stem from confidence and 100% belief in yourself. Having a winning mindset is one of the most powerful self improvement tips. Because having one, will ensure that you are successful in every endeavour (winners never give up).
It's important to de-stress (regularly) - Stress can develop over time. It can spread through your body like a vicious disease (a lot of people believe that disease originates from being too stressed out) so it's important that you take time out every now and again to relax, unwind and de-stress. Allow yourself whatever opportunities you have to do it (very important)

It's ok to say no sometimes.. - Sometimes people will ask too much from us that we just cannot comply with. It is ok to say no every once in a while. It's also ok to put yourself first whenever necessary.
Remove negative aspects and barriers in life - Are there certain negative people in your life that always seems to be bringing you down? If you feel like this is the case, then it's ok to eliminate them from your life (and no i don't mean to murder them lol). You do have a choice.
Make more friends - On the flipside to the above; remove bad friends from your life and replace them with some good ones (people that are always positive and encourage you). You may find that it's exactly what you needed. It's a refreshing feeling.
Appreciate the small things in life - Sometimes we're too used to having the finest things in life that we forget about all the smaller things... take the time to see things for what they really are (even the smallest of kind gestures) this will make you enjoy life more.
Practice patience - They say patience is a virtue. It's taken me many years to learn the art of patience  and I'm only starting to understand it better as I get older. It will contribute to a calmer you.
Meditate - Meditating solves many mental blocks, promotes great health and helps to clarify your senses. Take the time to do it every now and then and it will feel like you're rejuvenated after each session.

Practice these 15 self improvement steps daily and you will be well on your way to a happier and healthier you.

Psychic Mind Readers - Are They For Real?

When I think of psychic mind readers. The thought that comes to my mind is that they're intuitive, aware, empathetic and creative individuals. Who are really quite perceptive. They will also have balanced chakras (in particular the 3rd eye chakra)

Some of my readers have asked me - what do you think of psychic mind readers?

My answer is them is that I believe at our core, we are all made out of billions of atoms vibrating at certain frequencies. I believe that it's possible that psychic mind readers are able to tune into these frequencies - to be able to give us insights into our own lives.

Does this mean I believe that all psychic mind readers are truly genuine? The answer to that question is no. It takes a certain level of ability and intuition to pull it off. But I believe anything's possible, it's quite a fascinating subject that my friends will often talk about.

So what are your thoughts and views on psychic mind readers?

Communicating With And Programming The Subconscious Mind

As an evolved species. Humans have developed two types of minds (and both are crammed into one brain)

The conscious mind - which is responsible for our thinking, logical reasoning, complex calculations, perception of spatial distance.

The subconscious mind - which is responsible for our breathing, circulation, awareness, creativity, imagination, memory and learning.

These two different minds work together to make you who you are today. You have your own set of beliefs, values and cognitive abilities. The conscious and subconscious mind do their best to ensure that you survive in the most effective manner that you know how to. So the purpose of this article is to explore ways in which we can communicate directly with the subconscious mind.
Some of the things this would be useful for are:
  • Altering some of our bad or negative habits
  • To excel in certain areas of our lives
  • Remove limiting beliefs
  • Adjusting our personal traits/characteristics
  • Allowing us to feel more confident/happy
  • Promote restful sleep/recovery
  • Aid in our perception issues
  • Positive mental imagery
  • Being more productive
  • Improve your emotional state

Theses are just some of the examples of what we could accomplish if we could program our subconscious mind. Please realise that the subconscious mind is extremely powerful. It learns through repetition. So the more you do something (even if it's negative or wrong) the stronger the link will be to the point where; you will do things subconsciously. I'm sure you must of heard that term before. The reason is that through repetition, your subconscious mind will learn the most important aspects of each task you undertake. It does this so you won't have to re-learn an important activity in the future. A good example of this is when you first learnt how to drive a manual car.
You had to remember to concentrate, accelerate, steer, shift gears, utilise the clutch, indicate before lane changing and perform shoulder checks for your blind spot.

Because of the complexity of this activity. Your brain decided that it would be a good idea to 'store' that into your subconscious mind. So now when you hop into the car, you don't even need to think on a conscious level to drive - you just 'do it'. This is all thanks to your subconscious mind.

So how do we go about programming our own subconscious mind? What's necessary for us to do that? The easiest method I've found is through creating your own self hypnosis mp3 tracks. It's a lot easier than it sounds. All you will need is: your computer, a microphone and a script to read. I suggest creating your own self hypnosis tracks because your subconscious prefers your own voice (as opposed to any one else's : it's the most effective self hypnosis secret I've found)

There are 3 phases to creating your own great self hypnosis tracks

Phase 1: Induction: This process is to get your conscious mind to relax so there will be no resistance to your suggestions. I would recommend creating a quick 5 minute script that encourages ... deep relaxation... and focus. It's also good to have relaxing music playing in the background (like waterfalls, rainfalls, sounds of the beach etc.)

Phase 2: Suggestion: This is the meat of your track. You want to re-affirm what your goal would be and the situations in which it would be useful for. You can 'create verbal scenarios' within your track to help your subconscious mind to process what you want it to do. Be repetitive because this is how your subconscious mind learns. Try out several ideas and weave them together.

Phase 3: Wake-Up: This is the end portion of your track. You want to allow yourself to be woken up with a count down 'and now, when I count down from 5 to 1, you will feel alert and refreshed and ready to utilise everything effectively...' As you make the track make sure you speak in a calm and relaxing tone (just like any normal clinical hypnotist would) and be sure to only speak positive language to your subconscious because it cannot discern the difference between positive and negative.

Once you have created your own programming subconscious / self-hypnosis mp3 track all you need to do is listen to it everyday (repetition is key) and you will have the best results. *use earphones*

This is how you can communicate with your subconscious mind and program it to do whatever it is you want in life.

How To Improve Your Natural Awareness Levels

Awareness simply means to be able to percieve - being cognitive of our surroundings and objects. Also, realise that most of our senses play a keen role in our awareness levels. Not just our ability to see.
As we have evolved over many thousands of years, humans have also developed the ability of being self-aware (being aware of our own different states, awareness of our own internal energies etc.)

I'm often asked by many loyal readers, "What's the best way to improve our own awareness levels?"

To which I would often respond. It's first best to practice closed-eyes meditatation (practice breathing awareness) this technique will help you to cultivate 'self-awareness'. Because it forces us to lose one of our senses and by doing this; heightens our other senses. I encourage you to try this for 7 days. After one week of effective closed-eye mediation your senses will be heightened and you will become more self-aware. It sounds a little zen-like, this technique has helped me to develop not only my  self-awareness but also improved my intuition.

If you are unable to meditate, I would advise that you try listening to binaural beats with headphones because it's an easy way to force your body into a meditative state. This is for those that find that they can't meditate due to their surrounding environment being too distracting.

So meditate for 7 days and see how this will improve your natural awareness levels.

Chakra Exercises And Balancing Techniques

The word chakra was derived from the Sanskrit language meaning 'wheel'. The 7 chakras are responsible for integrating your experiences, energy, emotions and spirituality and keeping them all in balance within your body. The chakras are associated with different organs and energy centers in our body. Starting from the base of the spine and all the way to the top of our heads.

When our chakras are out of balance it is believed we will manifest various diseases, emotional disturbances and health conditions. So therefore it is important to exercise the chakras and bring them back into balance with special chakra balancing techniques.

Very much like a muscle will atrophy without continued stimulus - you should also approach your chakras with this same regard. It's also reported that people who have mastered the balancing of their chakras to have developed special abilities reffered to as siddhi's (some may simply call it phenomena) it should be noted that these exercises and balancing techniques should not be used solely for the development of these special 'powers'. It's just nice if you should happen to receive them.

The 7 Chakras:
  1. Muladhara : Root Chakra (ovaries/prostate) focuses on Survival
  2. Swadhisthana : Sacral Chakra (last bone in spinal cord, coccyx) focuses on Sexuality/Reproduction
  3. Manipura : Solar Plexus Chakra (navel area) focuses on Energy/Willpower
  4. Anahata : Heart Chakra (heart area) focuses on Decisions/Love/Compassions
  5. Vishuddha : Throat Chakra (throat and neck area) focuses on Truth/Creativity
  6. Ajna : Third Eye Chakra (pineal gland) focuses on Intuition/Dreaming
  7. Sahasrara : Crown Chakra (top of the head) focuses on Higher Consciousness/God
The best way to exercise and bring back balance to the chakras is through - yogic meditation. This involves chanting the seed sounds of each chakra while doing breathing excercises.

The "A" within each chant sounds like AH, drawn out and resonant. You want the chants to resonate from your belly each time you repeat it.

ROOT Chakra Chant: LAM
SACRAL Chakra Chant: VAM
NAVEL Chakra Chant: RAM
HEART Chakra Chant: YAM
THROAT Chakra Chant: HAM
3RD EYE Chakra Chant: OM/AUM
CROWN Chakra Chant: NG

When you are chanting, place your awareness on each location of the chakra as you work through the list. Think of the associated colours of each chakra as you do too (imagine a colourful wheel that spins in each location). Please also work on each chakra in that specific order. You cannot start from the crown and work down as you need to balance your base first. So use the appropriate structure.
When chanting - also extend the sound so it resonates and then press the tip of your tounge up to the roof of your mouth.

With diligent practice it will be very easy to balance your chakras. Bringing you back into alignment and making you feel more grounded. The act of meditation is mentally and physically refreshing so practice it often when you feel a little low of energy or mentally exhausted.

Help With Depression and Psychosis Symptoms

Some therapists believe that there is a strong link between serious depression and psychosis.

When an individual suffers from psychosis, they will act as if they've lost touch with reality. This is usually the case with people who abuse drugs (either recreationally or otherwise). They will act in ways that suggest that they're 'not normal' and sometimes just 'snap' and lose it. People suffering from psychosis will not realise that they're not normal. In fact, everything they do is because of an imbalance in important neurotransmitters in the brain. They may report hallucinations, consistant delusional thoughts, personality fluctuations and severe disorderly thought processes.

Psychosis can stem from drug abuse, genetic predispositions, central nervous system conditions and diseases and brain damage. As well as imbalances within the brain's natural neurochemistry.

Major depressive disorders like MDD and Bi Polar sufferers usually report symptoms of severe depression. Meaning that they feel really down most of the time. They may have continuous thoughts of self-harm and suicide and will sometimes hurt themselves. Depression is a serious condition - if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression then please seek help. The sooner that you do; the better your chances are for eliminating these negative feelings and put yourself back on the right track.

The link between depression and psychosis symptoms is that the body will be neurochemically imbalanced. It's important to know that when our body's neurochemistry is out of balance, disease and mental conditions easily develop. There are natural ways to help with these conditions, without needing to resort to pharmaceutical drugs. I would advise the reader to check out some of the resources on this website (like binaural beat technology and mind machines) as these will help alleviate MDD depression and psychosis symptoms naturally.

Remove Phobia - Ways To Reduce Your Natural Fears And Phobias

Removing phobias is a definately a tricky issue to deal with.

For the most part, our phobias are something that we've conditioned within ourselves from previous traumatic experiences. It may be from an early childhood experience or it could have just been a random traumatic experience that you've encountered from any stage in your life.

The part of our brain that controls fear and response is called the amygdalae. Derived from the latin/greek words meaning 'almond' and 'tonsil'. Which effectively describes what the amygdalae looks like. Being part of the limbic system - the function of the amygdalae is to process the memory of our emotional reactions to events that have occurred in our lives. It does this autonomously working around the clock to help ensure that your survival rate is maximised. It's also the part of our brain that controls our fight or flight mechanism.
This is the part of our brain that 'remembers' fear and traumatic events, it's so effective at doing this that if you have any phobias, you can thank your amygdalae for remembering them.

There are several ways to help reduce your fears and phobias. The first step is to identify your phobias and because they're not always a conscious thing. It would be wise to visit a clinical psychologist to have them analysed.

Some of the things that psychologists and hypnotherapists will do is to explore your early childhood to see if there were any events that caused these phobias to take form. Once they have identified your phobias they will work with you on ways to effectively help you to reduce your phobias.

It's important that we go through life knowing that just because you have a phobia, doesn't mean you have to 'put up with it' for the rest of your life. All phobias are eventually curable and for the most part; you won't have to live with it forever.

Professionals you could consider visiting are: NLP practicioners, Psychologists, Hypnotherapists and Counsellers.

Some techniques you could explore to help remove your phobias are: Subliminal hypnosis, Positive affirmations, Chakra balancing and Meditation.

These techniques will not cost you any money and they're the best way to start tackling your phobias. Just remember that phobias that are deeply ingrained will take more work to remove. Be patient and have the courage to continue working on them until you remove all the negative phobias from your life.

Mind Machines and what they're useful for. Our review.

Mind Machines - What are they for? Our review..

Mind machines have been popularized since early 90's (in truth, they've probably been around for much longer)

They're built upon the concept of light and sound for brainwave entrainment. Very useful for improving multiple areas of your life. It combines both sound and light to help induce relaxation and meditation. Without having the necessity of being a guru. This allows patients to heal naturally.

Using a mind machine will help to reduce symptoms of: Stress, Anxiety, Alzheimer's, PTSD, ADD, PMS, CFS, SAD, Depression, Insomnia, Autism, Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia and many other conditions.

The effective use of brainwave frequency entrainment via binaural simulation technology helps to program the mind's elasticity. Invoking deep meditation that will not take years (such as the meditation techniques utilised by monks)

These Mind Machines help to rebuild our neurochemicals and in many patients, this is a completely safe and drug-free alternative to mainstream western medicine and drugs. In fact, various homeopathic practictioners will actually recommend these machines over using drugs as a fix to many ailments and conditions.

Allowing your body to naturally heal and repair itself. On average sessions with a mind machine can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. The longer your sessions are; the better you will feel as the time spent with the machine allows your brain to produce important neurochemicals naturally. The importance of which can never be underestimated. Because when our neurochemicals are out of balance; mental diseases and conditions start to easily form.

Heal yourself with a mind machine today and take full advantage of all the health benefits that come with it.

DMT - The brain's naturally occuring hallucinogen

We've all taken drugs before. Even if we've never been aware of it...

When we go to sleep at night. Our brain's (or more specifically, the pineal gland) will produce a substance called DMT (Dimethyltryptamine).

DMT is a naturally occuring hallucinogen. This is the substance which causes us to have our wild dreams at night.

So when we are deep asleep and dreaming. We are actually, by definition -hallucinating.

The same thing applies when we ingest DMT (taken orally) you could hallucinate with your eyes open. Many people refer to this as the fourth dimension.

The ancient shamans of old times would concoct a brew called Ayahuasca which contained DMT and this would lead them to have visions and induce trance like states in which they would prophesize the future.

Interestingly enough, by ingesting DMT - you could hallucinate with your eyes open or closed (as opposed to sleeping - which is generally done with the eyes closed)

It is also believed that when we die, the brain produces DMT - so could this be the molecule that leads us onwards to the afterlife?
